One of the more complicated projects we have taken on in a while is this small bathroom.  The floor space is about 5' x 10' with the closet and shower built in.  Originally it was a small back porch, which was turned into a bathroom decades ago.  We pretty much gutted the room and started over. About the only thing that did not move was the plumbing for the toilet. The room is too small to get full photographs, but hopefully the pictures below will give an idea of the designs.

We spent a long time coming up with the design for this room. Somehow we wanted to build a tramp art filled bathroom that combined the idea of a rustic farm wash house with themes from European cathedrals.  Also, we decided not to use and twig furniture elements in the room. Once we acquired the massive old sink in a "roadside retrieval" the design started to work itself out. We were able to find reproduction hardware for the sink and built the cabinet with salvaged materials.

We had to gut the room, re-frame the outside wall, remove two old casement windows and replace them with one energy efficient window.  The shower unit had to come in through the window opening before the window was installed. The walls and ceiling were made form tongue and groove pine.  As is common with older houses, nothing was square, flat, level or plumb...nothing.

The tramp art in the room took weeks and weeks to complete.  I cut, notched, painted and distressed most pieces before fastening them in place. Overall the project took more than three months worth of evenings and weekends. Most of the tramp art is made from pine. There are some salvaged Crockett mallets and handles included to look like columns. Shelley did the tile work on the windowsill and sink top.  She also worked with me on the design of the tramp art moldings, the floor and the painting.

As you can see by the arched elements over the window and the triple column design on the sides, we like cathedrals. Ever since visiting some different cathedrals and basilicas in France and England I have wanted to use those influences in my work.  The geometry and symmetry of the ancient structures becomes more apparent and appreciated as I try to work out the designs for tramp art creations.
